Thousands of Maryland motorists have felt the sting of a speed camera, but what happens when the speed camera operator is caught speeding?

In the past year, more than 150,000 motorists were snapped by speed
cameras mounted in state vehicles that monitor highway work zones.

But one speed camera operator was caught breaking his own rules Sunday. A motorist used his cell phone to record the vehicle traveling 80 mph on I-70.

The vehicles are owned by a private company that administers the state's Safe Speed Program. State Highway officials are examining that contract.
