When they upgraded the standard WRX to the EJ25 out of the Legacy Turbos, it caused a bump in horse power to 280. They didn't do any work to the STi at that time so it was still rated at 300. The STi 6-speed is insanely heavy for a manual tranny and makes the STi heavier then the standard WRX. Plus the added wieght of the wing and such. The weight difference combined with a more open gear ratio in the trannies was enough to make the standard WRX faster then the STi in some tests. I believe since that time however the STi has gotten a few horse power bump. When you get the STi you are paying for alot stronger car mechanically. The STi tranny has been handling HP in the 500's with only a clutch upgrade. The stock WRX Trannies have been blowing gears if they are run too hard at the strip.
