we've tried steel tubes in the past. and they suck. yeah, they are durable, but they are heavy as piss. and when you have a show with ~3000 tubes... yeah.... no. and the unbolt and carry, just makes that much more work and crap you have to carry back and forth from the magazine onto the truck. off the truck to the site, back onto the truck, and back into the magazine. and bolting them together and all that is just not feasable. not to mention, we use 1X2" slats to "strap" the racks together. and they are nailed in place... cant do that with metal.
aaaaaaaaaaaaand... you don't want a whole bunch of product sitting inside metal containers when you are running an electronically fired show. or a barge show where it is metal on metal contact and the smallest electrical charge could set the whole place ablaze.
kinda like this show....
and in all actuality, the steel tubing, if you were to make it light enough, would be thinner than the composite we use now. and, even the thickest tube of whatever material can be blown open when the lift charge doesn't propel the product out of the tube and subsequently it explodes in the tube.
the ones that blew were 5" shells. in the air, they would explode to a diameter of around 500ft. package that into a tight area and blow it. makes a killer light show.
