... any chance you see a blue screen error the instant that it 'shut off' and rebooted on ya?
as for the lockups, I'd initially say it was overheating, but it could be driver issues, too
what OS, Video card, etc?
If you havent already, take the side panels off and leave them off and see if that helps the freezing-- if it was overheating, this should help pinpoint that.
