If we included the debt of every company in which GM has some sort of stake, the number wouldn't reflect GM's own debt obligations. GM has appropriate debt for its size. Many companies are worse off than GM when it comes to debt. Since GM no longer owns the majority of GMAC, it isn't one of GM's debt obligations.
