I don't think they wrecked it, it was more like they took parts and lit it on fire.
So, totaled in a sense that it was marked as a loss on insurance.
Funny story btw. I wouldn't trust those lights back then anyway. My friends came on constantly for no apparent reason. Besides it was a chevette. i'd be suspicous if the lights did NOT come on.

I was lucky enough to work at a large Chevy dealer in the 1980's. I was in this GM college degree progam - ASEP. We had to work in every area of service - including Heavy Line - engine overhaul. Me and my buddy got this shitbox, and the engine mounting bosses broke while it was on the engine stand.
That thing hit the floor with quite a sound, and 40 other techs looking right at us - classic. We used washers to bolt the engine back into the car. Then the check engine light kept coming on, and we just took the bulb out! Worked!
