I'm finishing up halo 2 (beat Halo 1 two days ago) before I buy REACH. I had no intent to buy ODST, but bought my xbox360 around the launch of Halo 3 and waitied for assassin's creed. The storyline for the HALO saga is definitely one of the better ones for a video game.
For FPS games, either you like them or don't.
If you like FPS, you're either going to like the future based alien shooters, or the WW2 shooters, or the modern special ops shooters. They're all good, but a matter of personal preferrence. They all are the same game essentially except for GoW, but that's a whole nother story.
Touching on the realism arguement. Halo is set in the future and who knows. Maybe in 100 years we'll have lasers and guns like the needler. It's a possibility. Modern Warfare is supposed to take place now, and with the no heat signature for a modern game, you'd have to do something like roll around in the mud a la Ahhhhhnold. This whole point is moot because we're playing a game for entertainment, not for realism. Ghost Recon is probably the most realistic shooter on the market though.
That being said, I prefer the Halo series over CoD, simply because there was only two missions I liked in the original CoD:MW. The Ghillie Suit mission and the one when you're in the C130 (or whichever the plane is with the 3 different guns, providing air support for the ground troops). Those are what set it apart from other war games. Halo has vehicles, MW had a few hints of greatness. When MW comes out with a Ghillie suit game CoD:Modern Sniper, I'll be all over it.
I prefer Halo to the other FPS games out there on Xbox360, but I'm not saying that CoD is a terrible game. We have a word for people who speak out saying something sucks without giving an explanation...It starts with a fan and ends with a boy...
