That said...a project car would be awesome to have for you two. As a project, though...it really wouldn't be a good daily driver. And you'd have to seriously commit to working on it, or else it'll become a hunk of metal in your garage...
I like my Cobalt. I can't say anything bad about it. It's been incredibly reliable, I get 35mpg on average (mostly hwy driving), I think it looks pretty good, and it's got a little pep for an economy car. You might look into a Focus, Pontiacs (Grand Am, or Prix...can never remember which one is which), or if you want to go pre-2005...check out the Cavalier...just make sure you tie the muffler up.

it was just a thought at the time, and this is something semi-temporary like maybe sophomore year in college start looking for a "real" car, here's what were looking at now:
