Because texting doesn't set off an alarm in someone's pocket, demanding that they communicate with you RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND. Texts are much less of an imposition, IMO. You can choose when to reply, and the pace of the conversation doesn't require your full attention.
In the case of the OP, it's clear that a phone call would be a better way to communicate if her husband is expecting immediate replies. But I appreciate being able to 'talk' to people all day, without having to give them my full instantaneous attention by having a phone conversation.
