You acted cool with the guy, and in turn he gave you a warning. I think that's all most cops want is to be treated with respect and have people accept responsibility. They don't get paid to be sh*t on, they get paid to enforce the laws. I think they'd be happy in going home at the end of the day knowing they enforced the laws and didn't necessarily have to give the decent people tickets.
Lots to be learned from your first contact. You did the right thing in providing the information up front and of course transporting the rifle in the trunk. We might be seeing a different kind of post (and/or news article) if you had that rifle in the passenger seat with you or even in the backseat.
