You can't compare the US to Europe. Europe has always been swayed more towards smaller cars due to the fact that they have less space in their cities.
What's more, GM and Ford are both developing more fuel efficient engines for their trucks...GM has a twin-turbocharged V6 in development plus the Gen V V8s and Ford's working on getting one of their Ecoboost engines into the F-150. You can expect to see 25-26 MPG full size trucks in the near future.
