I am a big fan of Rotel Robert but in this case I would first make it out of the book and then see what your taster recommends for round two...

Sum times I make it with stewed tomatoes....when cooking with tomatoes I add just a pinch of sugar....its needed ,especially in sketti sauce

....stewed tomatoes usually has a little sugar in it.....yup, a real good slab bacon is a very critical !
