The Volt was draws on elements of GM's HyWire concept from 10 years ago or so. It featured a 'skateboard' that contained a hydrogen fuel cell, fuel tank, electric motors, batteries, most of the suspension, steering, etc. Basically, all the mechanics of the car. Then bolt different bodies onto it. Some of this idea has made it into the eflex platform which the Volt is built off of. Its not as versitile as '1 size fits all' but its a step in that direction.
