I think the actual instant messaging should be left to the IM type sites...AOL, AIM, etc.
I think that adding an instant messaging board would take away from the sites usefulness as an information board and tool. Too many people would be in an instant message "chat room" and many different topics would be brought up in one conversation. However, others might want to know and learn that same info....but, it would end up being all locked away in a chat room thread. I think that would take away from all the specific areas of the site and that wouldn't be too cool.
I think it should be kept seperate for those special times that are needed
