If I go back to the dealerships I worked at, I can usually get away with going alone. It's even easier if you do like the wife and I have been lately and take the kids. "We have to see if the car seats all fit" and "we want to drive it" usually get the salesman to copy the license (some copy the insurance card as well) and off we go. Even with the 3rd seat SUV's, the sales guy doesn't really want to climb/ride back there, so it works out.
The other thing we tell them is that we want to see how it fits in the garage with the other vehicles. That usually gets us out of any "set route".
Oh, and I've got one guy that while he said he had fun, won't go on a test drive with me again. I was testing a new Charger with the hemi (the little one) and pretty much tossed him around in the back seat (front to back with the acceleration and braking...side to side changing lanes on the interstate going...well, let's just say well over the legal limit. Incidently, the Charger was awesome....actually considering trading in our Tahoe on one.
