Generally for Harley guys, the loud pipes are so that the typical asshole motorist who fails to see them can at least hear them and be clued in to their presence on the road. Loud pipes do INDEED save lives.

I agree with that. If the bike is loud so people can hear them, but the fact that they rev them all the damn time, even when stopped at a light, is obnoxious. It makes me
want to cut them off!
