Thank you for contacting me regarding the proposed bailout of the auto industry.

Last year, I cosponsored legislation passed by Congress that raises corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards to 35 miles-per-gallon by 2020, and provides grants to help car companies retool their factories to meet this requirement (P.L.110-140). I believe that we should further raise CAFE standards to 40 miles-per-gallon and provide tax incentives to consumers to encourage them to purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Unfortunately, American auto companies have resisted increased CAFE standards for years. Now, with the price of gas so volatile, they find themselves at a competitive disadvantage because their fleet is less fuel-efficient than foreign competitors. While I understand the importance of helping the American auto industry, I believe that any assistance they receive from the government should be designed to help them compete more strongly on their own.

This idiot is so clueless. GM has the highest fleet average MPG of any car company in the world!!!!! I hope this moron learned something during the hearings.
