I guarantee you that it will cost more to let the automakers fail than to loan them money.
And it's not as if this scenario hasn't happened before. The government gave Chrysler a loan in the 70s. Chrysler put it to good use and came back stronger than ever. They even paid back the loan 7 years before they had to.
