Don't feel bad. I hated High School so much that I never had any desire to continue any kind of schooling.
But, like yourself, I managed to get a decent paying job with the NJ Dept. of Corrections (Civilian, not officer) currently making about $45,000 a year. Plus the fantastic State Employee benefits.
While cost of living is generally high in NJ I have plenty of 'disposable cash' (I probably 'burn' $400-$600 a month). But I believe your area probably has a much higher cost of living than even NJ.
I do own my own home. But keep in mind, I have no (and never will have) devil children to suck my money dry. LOL
