I've got to admit, when I started reading this thread I had no faith that the animal lovers would come through! I am an emergency technician and partial owner of an emergency clinic and have a lot of experience with animals.
Big Brunsy - Possibly the worst advice I have ever heard...all of it! The "it's just an animal" attitude is why there are so many strays and animals that are in the shape that they are in. I'm sure you don't have the attitude that "it's just a car" when it comes to that sweet ride in your drive way, and that thing isn't even a living thing. If you had a flat tire on it would you just blow it up and call it a day? 1. Euthanasia should not be that expensive anywhere! 2. Penicillin does not prevent all types of infection, especially those caused by bite wound from a wild animal, you will need a much stronger, spectrum specific antibiotic. But, when it comes to your animals do as you wish, i'd just refrain from advice to others.
Ibuprofen can cause ulcers but it's because it is renal toxic. It will send your animal into renal failure which then causes the ulcers in the mouth. I don't recommend ANY OTC meds for humans. The only one I ever recommend is bennadryl for allergies and for short term use unless rx by your rDVM.
Pet insurance is a great idea. There are some out there that will cover emergencies but not routine things like vaccinations. There are also some that will cover a certain percentage of each. Do your research on what you are looking for. Also, some insurance wont cover conditions that animals are predisposed to.
Stacy- I agree with some advice above, get your cat to a veterinarian as soon as you can (which seems to be what you are doing). They will need to take rads (expect them to take at least two) and depending on how painful your baby is they may need to get some pain meds on board but hopefully will not have to sedate (which if he is as painful as you say they may need to). Keep him as confined as possible, only letting him out to use the bathroom. Good luck with everything and keep us all updated, and thank you. From someone who sees how crappy some people treat their animals on a daily basis, it's always good to see people who truly appreciate the joy that animals bring to our lives.
If you need anything give me a shout. Like I said, I am no veterinarian, but I've been in this field for a while and have seen just about everything.
