Ford is the latest automaker to announce the need to idle some of its facilities as a result of the massive plumes of smoke and ash currently residing in the European airways as a result of an Icelandic volcano. Ford says it will idle two assembly plants in Michigan, responsible for the Mustang and Focus models.
According to a report by Click on Detroit news, Ford will idle the Flat Rock and Wayne assembly plants as a result of a parts shortage caused by the restricted air travel in Europe.
Ford says the Wayne assembly plant had previously been scheduled for a one week shut down in early May, which will now be rescheduled for next week due to the parts shortage from Europe.
The Flat Rock assembly plant, which is a joint venture with Mazda, did not have planned idle time prior to the parts shortage. Due to the continued air restriction in Europe, however, Ford and Mazda will temporarily idle the plant during Wednesday and Thursday next week.
Ford is only the latest automaker affected by the ash clouds, joining both BMW and Nissan.
