You can message eachother in game no matter what you're playing, I am not sure there is a chat client but maybe. Also you can send multiplayer invites to any user from any game which they can accept and start the game up with.
It sounds like the xBox system is proabably better for that but the PSN system is not so flawed that its crippled, its just not as advanced.

Ok, yeah I could definitely agree with the last statement there. And I should probably clarify: the chat sessions I am referring to are all voice chat. Very nice for just chatting with your buddies online and such.
Anywho, the $50 per year for the Xbox live service seems worth it to me, as I take full advantage of all it's abilities on a regular basis. I can see where someone who only plays online once in a great while wouldn't want to bother with it though.
