The "smartness" of such a move depends greatly on the many factors surrounding it.
For instance...On the Camaro, well over 50% of SSs sold were automatics (a significant amount). Had AFM not been used, and a modified LS3 not engineered, those cars would have rated probably around 23mpg hwy....But they did, so 50% of those cars sold and contributing to CAFE now have 25mpg hwy...hurting the average less.
Let Chrysler determine the "smartness" of such a scheme.
