There is a huge amount of energy available, but most of it is lost. HUGE amounts of thermal energy are lost in nuclear power-plants. Both coal and nuclear power use heat engines and convert to electricity. Nuclear power is literally less efficient. On top of that, suitable materials are much more difficult and expensive (as far as energy and money go) than coal to obtain. Nuclear power is much cleaner than coal, but coal, at least at the moment, is better for energy production in the long run.
