If you shoot somebody in self defense and it is ruled as such in a court of law, the family would have absolutely no case to sue you.
If its ruled as not self-defense, well... you're going to have bigger problems than getting sued.
As for shooting somebody outside your house - if you have a CCW it doesn't matter as long as its self-defense.
