Gears are a way of gaining mechanical advantage. By using a larger gear to turn a smaller one, you turn that smaller gear multiple times for each turn of the first (larger) gear. The ratio (such as 1.57:1, as in your advantage) is how many turns of the second (usually smaller) gear per turn of the original (usually larger) gear. In rough terms, in equates to how much your torque will be multiplied.

Good explanation, now how about this...
What's the equation, or how do they derive the "Final Drive" numbers? For example, all 2010's are 3.27, but v8 manuals are 3.45.
