Canada is not American. Brazil is not American. Guatemala is not American. The majority accept that America is short for United States of America, and would never think 'America' is referring to North America or South America or Central America, particularly when the discussion is about nationalism. It would be a stretch to think of American continents when mentioning American vs European or Asian
