As a guy that has owned a ton of Mustangs the performance numbers look nice but they are close between the cars. To me it looks like the Stang is a little more cranked up from the factory.
Here are a few things I would like to know.
1) What will be the numbers for a base GT without the track pack, bigger rims, bigger brakes, and lower gears. (The top end version is the one Ford has been giving to reviewers.) One things about a Camaro is a SS1 has the same performance spec as a SS2 just not all the interior goodies. My guess is a top trim Mustang will be slightly faster, slightly better handling, and stop a few feet quicker than a Camaro; BUT the base will be slightly slower (due to higher gearing), slightly worst handling and stop a few feet longer. If the go fast options did not effect Mustang performance they would not be worth much. There should be a difference. So performance could be a wash depending on trim. It will also be interesting to see if this new 5.0 opens up like the LS3. As many Camaro owners know the LSx motors get stronger as the break in. The 5.0 could get faster as time goes by.... or the performance difference may shrink as the LS3 gets stronger and the 5.0 does not.
2) How maxed out is this new 5.0 motor. Once tuners get their hands on them it will be interesting. Again the LS3 with a few mods and a blower will push over 600 crank HP. Will the 5.0 scale like that or is it closer to its limit. If so stock for stock the Mustang is faster but a few mods and the Camaro could take a lead again. Time will tell on this.
For me the Camaro was an easy choice as it is IMO by far the best looking pony car made in the last 20 years. It looks like a Million dollars and even though they are common I still get a ton of looks, and smiles. The Mustang does not even come close in this department. The Camaro is a concept car on the road the stang looks boring in comparison. (and plain ugly from the rear.) I personally like the 05-09 Mustang body style better than the current.
