had to do this with my wife's laptop. (she has a tendency to hit it and throw it when it isn't running "fast enough")

pulled the hard drive, bought an external adapter at Best Buy for like $45.00. Set the hard drive to slave and hooked it up to my pc. copied the data, bought a new laptop minus hard drive, swapped in hard drive, wiped it clean and reinstalled windows, then copied over the info from my pc
