Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have to kill someone. And unless you live in an area with a really screwed up local government, it should be perfectly legal to own a firearm in your home. I think the argument against owning a firearm is a little flawed, being that a responsible firearm owner it going to act a lot different than some trigger happy thug on the street. Its not about shooting the first second you get nervous or trying to scare people off with your weapon. Its about being able to save your ass when you have no other choice- for example, if this salesman had charged her in her carport, what would she have been able to do without a firearm?
Tasers make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside because you don't have to try to kill when you use them, but the fact that they are either one time use or extremely limited distance, and only incapacitate the exact moment you are using them, make them pretty much completely useless for self or home defense use compared to a firearm. Remember, no one is going to get shot unless they give you a damn good reason for them to deserve it.
