Not sure exactly, but I guess it just plain doesn't work
My guess would be that it is some sort of feature to keep someone from 'accidentally' shifting into neutral at wide open throttle and thereby ruining the engine. Clearly they didn't think anyone would actually NEED to do that in an emergency.
