The NHTSA is doing their job for a change. This is precisely what they're there for. Don't turn this into a tin-foil-hat discussion. There is no corruption or conspiracy theory. Toyota was being (is being!) bad, and the NHTSA caught'em.
Oh, and for the record....Toyota has NEVER been the #1 car company in the USA. And GM issued their own large-scale recall earlier this month.

We elect our government in this country with the highest internation standards of democracy. There is next to no corruption here.
Toyota, on the other hand, has concealed and fought past claims, avoided federal regulators, and lied to the market about company priorities. It is abundantly clear that products wearing Toyota badges have sacrificed a reputation for safety in the name of money and at the expense of lives.
Toyota lied. The government called them out. Now, Toyota will suffer. We would expect this timeline for any regulatory issue, so how is that corrupt?
