Ford's U.S. sales top GM's

DETROIT - Ford posted a 43% jump in February U.S. auto sales and outsold General Motors for the first time in nearly a dozen years as it grabbed sales from struggling Toyota.
Ford's sales surged thanks to strong demand for its cars and because it was able to grab some customers from Toyota, whose sales fell 9% due to its massive safety recall.
Ford sold 334 more cars than GM in February, its first victory over its U.S. rival since August 1998, when GM was in the midst of strike.
GM reported an 11.5 percent increase, helped by new models and Toyota's woes.
While Ford (F, Fortune 500) reported a 43% increase in U.S. sales in February, much of the gain was due to a 74% jump in fleet sales to businesses. Rental car companies alone accounted for just over 30,000 vehicle sales. Without the rental companies, Ford sales would have been up only 13% in the month.
But including sales at the Volvo unit Ford is in the process of selling, its sales total topped GM's for the first time since August 1998, when a strike briefly shut many GM plants.
