60k miles was about time for a head gasket. If one made it to 100k miles, it was due for a full rebuild. Rings, seals..... bad, bad, bad engineering design.
Nightmare of an engine..... and GM continued the lineage of the iron duke well into the 1990s.... the 4 cylinder models in cars like the Beretta, Cavalier, Celebrity....

They weren't that bad. My first car (1988 olds cutlass calais) had one. I sold it with over 220k miles on it, only had to put a timing belt in it, at 170k miles. Deffinately got my moneys worth.
Now performance...thats another story!!
