Here are a couple of very interesting videos. In the first he attempts to get a floormat to make the pedal stick and goes on the explain and show the drive-by-wire technology on the Toyota. In the second he takes a pedal assembly and submerges it in freezing water (Toyota claims it can be a condesation moisture issue). He also bakes it in the oven. He is unbale to produce any instance where the assembly sticks.
