Actually they would have, it just sped up the process.

For years the Big 3 would 'back end' the new lador contracts the UAW demanded. Instead of giving the auto workers big per hour raises, they gave them better heath and retirement benefits. So as their workforce aged, the car makers labor costs went up, yet these workers were retired and thus no longer producing. It was a ticking time bomb. The recession just shortened the fuse.

Keep in mind, the 'Cadillac' health plans Obama is slamming are plans like the ones the UAW workers have. That's why the unions were demanding the proposed tax on them be eliminated.
