Its more about the processor. Each one is capable of performing several calculations simultaneously, and can do as many calculations per core as any other high-end processor. And it doesn't care what its calculating, they're all just 1's and 0's to it. Plus, with a purpose built system you need to physically integrate all the components together, building a series of computers and connect them all together. With this, all you need to do is develop software and data links. And if
that is the case, it is easily scalable.
Think of it as being similar to battery power. If you want ... 9V you could go out and buy a single 9V battery, design one yourself, or get 6 AA in series. But what happens if you want to upgrade to from 9V to 24V. You can toss out the 9V, design a new 24V battery, or add 10 more AA's.
