Actually, although that's what was "advised", it's bass-ackwards...

1) Put it in Neutral FIRST (which will interrupt the unintended forward motion)

and THEN

2) Apply the brakes, and head for the curb/shoulder.

IF you SLAM on the brakes and THEN put it in NEUTRAL, you'll suddenly stop a lot quicker than surrounding traffic would likely be able to safely respond...causing even more mayhem...

Those who drive in icy/snowy/slippery conditions should already know the quickest way to stop ANYTHING in a shorter distance is to put it in Neutral first... The same situation applies here.
