When you compare living on Pandora (for argument sake - assume it would be possible) to living here on Earth - of course Earth may seem dismal or "lacking" for a better term.

The connections humans make with others is the key to happiness - case and point - this forum. What are you all doing here if not making connections with others?

The fictional Na'vi race has a much more "efficient" means of creating these connections through their hair tentacles (whatever they are) but not only can the form these connections with other Na'vi but with plants and animals and the world itself. How fricken amazing is that?? Of course that would be awesome.

I can sympathize for the people who long for that type of connection to others and the world - but I won't make fun of them for being dissatisfied with their own lives - even if they are going to the extreme. The problems obviously stem from some depression related to their own lives that is already in progress.

The thing is - connections like that can be made here on Earth, and there are beautiful places to live and see - I hope those people eventually figure that out.

I'm not the goodie goodie -don't make fun of others type of guy - BUT - I didn't really see anyone actually trying to put some real thought into this one - that was simply my attempt

PROCEEEED!!!
I agree with you 100%. I sympathize with these people because there is much more involved that just a movie. Just like with video games, gambling, alcoholism, etc, some people have a deficiency, mental illness, or just something about their past that makes them more susceptible to emotional effects. These emotions can come from video games, news reports, issues with relatives, and even movies. There's no need to be insensitive about their issues. That doesn't mean they should do it, just some people have different problems than you or I do.

I walked away from the movie, filled with awe at the visuals and moved by the themes portrayed in the Human Vs Navi/nature element. But for me it made me want to look more at our own culture vs say Native Americans or tribes in Africa and South America. As much as I like technology and advancements in science, you have to admit that all this has led to more problems that it has solved.
