Ha, this is pretty cool. Anais Nin's quote "We do not see things as they are - we see them as we are" is my e-mail sig. Essentially, it is saying that we filter our reality through ourselves, thus we always shade that reality.
That's why you can have two arguing friends tell you two different versions of the same fight, and both friends truly believe they are right. Usually, each one of them will (perhaps even unconsciously) boost their side of things and downgrade the other person's.
