So far, I've found that you need to make sure you use your upgrade points right off the bat. IMO, using your move to block is useless and a waste of a turn...you block minimizing the damage from the other guy, but don't get ANY damage sent back to the other guy.
I haven't a clue as to where to start on the codes either. I wish they could give some sort of hint.
Best thing to do, I've found, is to challenge everyone you can w/ a higher losing streak (sorry). But, in reality, that will get you more wins. Right now, I'm 12-2. I lost the two because I was challenged and for one, I didn't realize he was a level two bot. That was my first mistake. The other guy was hitting at 60 damage per turn. I figured out how he did that, but I wasn't set up to send that type of damage.
It's all about who you want to challenge and getting your bot set up to fight a SPECIFIC bot. For example, as an Impala, you have an upgrade that allows to trick the HHR and Cobalt. There's also an intimidation code agains the Avalanche and Silverado. OK...so I go to fight an HHR and I'll max out and save the upgrades against the HHR, then going into battle. I'll win everytime. Find out who is challenging you and save changes to your bot according to what type of bot they are.
