Detroit. 5 over on the freeway is 0 points, fine only. That is a state mandate.

Well, when people are going faster than 20 over the limit, I say sort of the same thing...I will ask "what is the emergency" or ask if they are related to Mario Andretti. A manner to be sarchastic, yet relative. 6 over and asking what is the emergency? The officer was probably absued as a kid, bullied or just new. When I make comments similar to that...understand that I do not stop people for anything less than 20 over and say that. I will cite them for 5 over depending on conditions or any other asenine driving I see other than the speeding. To say something sarchastic and write for the full 75 in a 55 is being a plain old dick. 60/55 citation if going faster than 20 over is appropriate.
Last night I stopped a lady in a 2007 SS truck. Paced her in a 55 doing 82. I hit my spotlight on her rearview and moved over to the center lane and pulled along side as she slowed to 55 and she seen me. We split off on a transition zone and she went her way, I went mine. As I paralleled where she was going, I had the option to reenter the same freeway I just left and observed her jacking up the speed as I was doing 60 and she was pulling away. Anyhow, I got behind her again (her thinking I was gone) and paced her at 83 in a 55...So I stop her and she proceeds to tell me her speedometer is broken, (actually TPMS sensor on the display she shows me) and says the speedo is malfunctioning because the electronics are bad. I proceeded to inform her that the speedometer is mechanical but will waive the ticket if she had an authorized Chevy dealer perform a speedo diagnostic. She then tells me that I had better things to do being a Detroit cop...Hmmm. Shoulda wrote her for the 83 in a 55.
Anyhow, 6 over is nothing. Most officers observe the "margin of error" in speedos at 5 mph and usually will cite over 10-15 depending on traffic/conditions. I myself do not bother with 10-15 over unless they are driving liks a holes, blowing lights, cutting people off, etc. Some officers are just dicks.
You also have to account for end of month ticket quotas. Worst time to speed is the last 5 days of the month...no matter what speed you are doing...especially with out of state plates.
I say fight it...seriously. I have successfully fought out of state tickets and am 3 for 3.
