In my opinion excuses are used when people don't want to do things, and usually are untrue.
Giving reasons on the other hand is when you want/intend on doing something but can't because of a prior engagement, something important comes up, or your mind was in 1000 different places that you forgot.
So yes, by my rationale, there is a big difference....
And I know you meant it as a joke, but I still wanted to make my point...
