not a huge city like phoenix though, i don't like traffic and big cities.

Oro Valley is a nice area.

Oro Valley/Tucson is kind of similar to Scottsdale/Phoenix (more expensive city on the edge of a large metropolitan area). Phoenix & Tucson each feel like a sprawling metropolis because most of the land is developed between them and their surrounding cities. Phoenix is a lot larger.

There's a lot of mountain towns but there's fire danger. There's more vegetation to burn the higher up in elevation one goes, for the most part. It's a real problem. Even a town like Cottonwood, AZ, which is only 1k ft higher in elevation than Oro Valley, has had fires.
