Same comment here. Bought one from RockAuto. Great price and didn't have to ship back the core. If it ever fails again, I'll have someone local refurbish it.
The dealer quoted me $1500. Instead, I bought the alternator for $250ish. That said, the install is a PITA. There are a few shortcuts you can take that makes it slightly faster but don't expect a few hours. Set aside a day and maybe having an extra set of hands is great when you get to unplug/plug part.
And finally, when I put a tester on my battery, the voltage ranges from mid 12's to high 14's. It all is based on load. If you turn on lights and heater/ac, you should see your alternator provide more power. This is all normal behavior.
