Posting here what I posted in another thread where this article came up. The blue is a quote from the article.
With support from some GM executives, the group’s purpose was to make a business case for the seventh generation of the iconic muscle car. A plan was generated and compiled, but upon being presented to decision makers, the proposal was “blown apart” due to the business case not being strong enough.
In essence, the plan’s key business-level performance targets – including sales volume forecast and profitability figures – were not met to green light the next-gen Camaro.
One source tells us that GM is still kicking the project around. “It’s still in play, but the light at the end of the tunnel is now dimmer,” the source tells us.
During my time in Product Portfolio Planning we had a name for this. The name was "Thursday". That was the day for the Product Development Review where every vehicle program goes for...well...review. And approval. Because of my position at the time I was in every one of those meetings for several years. Sat right behind Bob Lutz. He sat next to my boss and I had to be present to support my boss and take on any powertrain related assignments. I personally sat through 2 meetings where C6 was killed due to an insufficient business case. And yet, here we are seeing C8 on the street.
FWIW, the only vehicles I ever saw NOT get killed at some point in the product development process, or at least sent back to sharpen the pencils a bit, were full sized truck programs. Shocker. And even then there were specialty trims that did get killed. Like the 6-door Suburban and V10 trucks and utes....
I had also posted several months ago in that thread or another one that someone who is in a position to know told me that they saw two Camaro clay models. One had a tailpipe. In order for Design to create a clay, it is either a project with some serious consideration or a skunkworks with some heavyweight executive champion pushing it. This could be the project that the article is referring to.
