I thought I might give a brief 1yr update on my EV ownership summary on a Tesla Y.
For the price with rebates I feel I made a good purchase.
It has not needed a single trip to the dealer for repairs and nothing is broken. I have 6k mi on it now with mixed city highway.
A few flaws are common. I have a slight paint stain. The upon purchase moisture in the tail light hasn't returned despite going through brushed car washes monthly. I think the numbskulls at the dealer prepped it with high pressure washers. The keyless smartphone unlock sometimes needs to press door handle to unlock other doors or charging port. The full self driving is not full self driving in a safe and sane manner. Tinting and roof interior cover helped with the excess heat inside and battery usage to bring it back down. 12amp regular house plugs not enough to charge it before a big trip unless you plan ahead 24hours in advance or use superchargers there or back.
I DIY last week with the help of youtube a 220v from panel to the mobil charger wall mounted unit with a $40 optional plug and receptical that is 3 prong 30amp that now charges at 24amp which is much much faster and good for my usage. I don't want to draw down the 40a of the other Tesla wall charger I have in the box because I got a new heat pump AC and don't want to use too much solar power all at once and get charged for electricity when running both.
That segue's me in saying I'm not certain if I didn't have a house to charge at I'd want to go EV. The supercharging is slightly time consuming even going from 20-80 if I had to do it all the time and inconvenient, the 40cents per kilowatt at the superchargers here isn't so much cheaper than a hybrid to be worth my time.
The overall car isn't up to an upper line domestic car and is easily out classed by a eurocar or premium car.
I like the car very much for its regen braking.
Acceleration
Silent driving
mixed on the big screen but not enough old school knobs
seats and the rest of the interior is ok.
Full self driving in the latest update is ok. I got another free 30days because I'm too thrifty to pay a damn 12,000 now $8,000 for it! I was happy it drove me better to the cafe last week when a year ago it was more of a problem diving in the parking lane etc. However I had to grab the wheel to turn into the parking lot as it was going to pass it and what try to jump the curb and go into the side of the building later? It would have turned itself off and said take over at some point after stopping in traffic?
I never bought it with the expectation that giving a forward pointing cam only it would ever be capable of full autonomous function. I think adding radar or lidar and AI on them someday they will be able to do that. It does ok now on some simple drives that include on and off the highway.
My main reason to buy it have been met. Cheap purchase and operating costs. No breakdowns or dealer hassles. No hassle or rip off buying experience. No $500 oil changes like they want for my other car Service A Service B and super ripoff 50k or 100k services.
Whiners can go ahead and lose their minds now. I didn't burn my house down and all that. No one wants them, yeah sure. A year ago no one on my 12house block had an EV and now there are two Ys and a Toyota bz4x.
