If you don't mind the cost of diesel, go for the duramax.

This is how I present the comparison for folks shopping the 5.3L vs the 3.0L. If you're buying a duramax thinking that you'll save money, remember that diesel is almost $2 more per gallon than regular unleaded. You might not be saving any money at all. You'll get better highway fuel economy and you'll have more torque for towing but the added cost of fuel might be a wash or end up costing more in the long run.

If you're shopping the 6.2L vs the 3.0L, get the 3.0L because premium unleaded is closer to diesel in cost per gallon and the fuel economy difference will make the 3.0L come out ahead in the long run.

If the 3.0L was available in the ZR2, I would have bought it over the 6.2L. I will also add that the 3.0L is overall more reliable than either of the V8s.

That said, I think the best overall powertrain that GM has right now in terms power, fuel economy and reliability is the 2.7L HO.
