The US does have Pedestrian Protection requirements for the front end. To over simplify, this has led to higher front ends to get the hood away from engine structure for head impact.
Last week one of the local news stations did a super over-blown report on how pickups are getting huge and the grilles are getting flat and tall and posing an extreme hazard to pedestrians. I remarked to my wife that the tall, flat grilles and high hood lines are specifically due to pedestrian protection requirements. They are designed that way to keep pedestrian’s heads from slamming onto the hood and pushing through to impact the engine. Then I reached for the remote and changed the channel.
