I am inclined to believe that GM went with the FPC orientation that actually takes advantage of lower reciprocating weight and lesser vibrations. Looking at
the intake manifold that is on the LT6, the sound that the LT6 makes...
The LT6 is what is in the C8.R. Now, the one thing I am not 100% positive on is to if Corvette Racing allows that engine to always run to 8,600 RPM or if they regulate the engine to lower RPM's a large part of the time. The reason I even mention this is that, while watching their livestream of LeMans, when they were showing the in-car, drive-view footage, I only saw them going to just under 7,000 RPM. Maybe that was just a LeMans thing and related to a fuel strategy thing though.
